An Ode the Reuben Sandwich: Noriko’s Favorite

Reuben, whoever you are, we thank you.

Although Noriko is Japanese, Lloyd Weinstein’s wife and mother to their three children bought into the whole Jewish family when they got married back in 1967. What’s her favorite treat at Benjies Deli? That would have to be the Reuben sandwich.

And what’s not to love? Tender layers of corned beef smothered in sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing captured between two slices of the freshest rye bread. Then it gets toasted on the grill til the outside is nice and crispy, and the inside is hot and dripping with goodness. Is anyone else hungry yet? (more…)

Yom Kippur This Saturday, and Benjies Deli Has Your Favorites

While it’s customary to fast on Yom Kippur, we at Benjies Deli like to concentrate on the eating part—that is, the pre-fast meals and the post-fast meals. And we’ve got everything you need for those meals, whether you come in to Benjies to enjoy them, or we bring them to your door. We’ve been doing this since we opened in 1967, so we know a thing or two about traditional Jewish food!

Before the fast, we recommend our chicken soup with your choice of noodles, rice or kasha varnishkas, which comes in small or large sizes. Sharing with a special someone? We serve a “for two” meal that’s perfect for the Meal of Cessation (Seudat Mafseket), which usually calls for boiled chicken. But boiled chicken sounds boring, but not our Chicken in a Pot: half a chicken served in a tureen with matzoh balls, kreplach, noodles, rice and carrots, all swimming in delicious chicken broth. Hmmm, maybe you don’t want to share after all? If red meat strikes your fancy, we’ve also got Ribs in a Pot, which are deliciously tender short ribs in with the same goodies. And don’t miss our special “Mish Mosh, It’s a Meal!” soup, a bowl full of a matzoh ball, kreplach, rice, noodles, chicken and carrots all snug in our freshly made chicken stock. (more…)

The 2010 NFL Season Starts Tomorrow!!

Calling all NFL fans: oh yes, the season is about to start. And Benjies Deli has all the action, thanks to the DirecTV NFL Sunday Ticket package. Did you know that we can watch up to eight games on one of the six TVs we’ve got in the Bamboo Lounge? That every game will be in HD? That the Sunday Ticket gives us REDZONE, where every play from within the 20-yard line is highlighted and in HD? We can even get an update on your favorite players and get replays of all the NFL Sunday game highlights during the week! In a word, it’s awesome.

Tomorrow night kicks off with the New Orleans Saints vs. the Minnesota Vikings, down in the bayou. Although the Vikings have convinced Brett Favre to squeeze another season in, we’re not sure if it’s going to help them much. Between LeFavre’s ankle and Sidney Rice out on an injury, plus New Orleans being ticked off about not being hailed as candidates for the last SuperBowl, predictions are that New Orleans will win by as much as 10 points or more. It’s Labor Day Weekend!

Labor Day is upon us, and you know what that means: the official start of the football season is right around the corner. That’s right–they’ve been teasing us with pre-season games all month, but now it’s almost time for the real thing. And if you’re a transplant from another state and can’t always catch the big games for your teams, you’re in luck! Benjies Deli has the NFL Sunday Ticket Sports Package! Yes, we’ll have every game, especially the ones that aren’t on terrestrial television. So if you’re a Cheesehead or a Bears, Dolphins or Steelers fan, get over to Benjies and you’ll get to see your team play.

But, we get ahead of ourselves. This weekend is one of the best of the year: picnics, barbeques, pool parties and delicious, hearty, all-American food. But what if slaving over a hot barbeque all weekend doesn’t float your boat? What if you’d rather be resting on a raft in the pool? Don’t worry—call up Benjies Deli the day before to order up a few of their delicious platters. That way you won’t miss any of the sports action that is on the television all weekend. Get Hot Wings or Barbeque Meatballs by the dozen, or choose from one of our many sandwich trays. Want the sandwiches ready to eat? Try the Sandwich Platter or the 16″ Ring Sandwich. Want to give your guests the option of making their own? No problem: order the Cold Cut Buffet, the Brown Bag Buffet, the Smoked Fish Platter or the Lox Platter. (more…)
