It’s Labor Day Weekend!

Labor Day is upon us, and you know what that means: the official start of the football season is right around the corner. That’s right–they’ve been teasing us with pre-season games all month, but now it’s almost time for the real thing. And if you’re a transplant from another state and can’t always catch the big games for your teams, you’re in luck! Benjies Deli has the NFL Sunday Ticket Sports Package! Yes, we’ll have every game, especially the ones that aren’t on terrestrial television. So if you’re a Cheesehead or a Bears, Dolphins or Steelers fan, get over to Benjies and you’ll get to see your team play.

But, we get ahead of ourselves. This weekend is one of the best of the year: picnics, barbeques, pool parties and delicious, hearty, all-American food. But what if slaving over a hot barbeque all weekend doesn’t float your boat? What if you’d rather be resting on a raft in the pool? Don’t worry—call up Benjies Deli the day before to order up a few of their delicious platters. That way you won’t miss any of the sports action that is on the television all weekend. Get Hot Wings or Barbeque Meatballs by the dozen, or choose from one of our many sandwich trays. Want the sandwiches ready to eat? Try the Sandwich Platter or the 16″ Ring Sandwich. Want to give your guests the option of making their own? No problem: order the Cold Cut Buffet, the Brown Bag Buffet, the Smoked Fish Platter or the Lox Platter. (more…)

Have an Ice Cream Sundae at Benjies New York Deli

It's summer, and time for ICE CREAM!

Finally! Summer’s here, and it’s not messing around. It’s been HOT. And there’s nothing better to cool you down than some cold ice cream.

Don’t wait for the ice-cream truck to come down your street, especially if you’ve got a day job. They rarely stop by office buildings (but hey, what a great idea!), so why not come down to Benjies New York Deli at lunch for a special treat. Have something small for lunch, like some latkes, or healthy, like a salad, and splurge on dessert.

We’ve got a lot of ice-cream drinks to choose from, including old-fashioned milkshakes served in the metal shaker (like they should be!). We also serve ice-cream sodas in chocolate, strawberry, cherry or vanilla flavors and the old favorite: a root-beer float. You can choose root beer or Coca-Cola® with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream. Remember having an egg cream as a kid? Well, Benjies New York Deli still makes them by hand, with milk, chocolate syrup and seltzer–is your mouth watering yet? (more…)

Guest Blogger: Chapman Student Loves Benjies New York Deli

As a newly transferred student to Chapman University last semester I made it a mission to try as many new eateries as possible in and around Orange. I soon found this task to be arduous when I realized just how many food establishments are in the area.

I did however stumble upon Benjies Deli while I was at the hardware store off of Tustin and La Veta. After a day of moving into my new apartment I crawled into Benjies with no expectations. I remember ordering the Benjies Special and being absolutely blown away. Since then my girlfriend and I have made dinner at Benjies a weekly tradition. We always start with a plate of potato latkes that are inhaled in a matter of minutes. She always gets the lox and cream cheese on a bagel, which she claims is the best she’s ever had. I however have found myself ordering something new of the menu every time. I can honestly say that through the entire seven-page menu I have never been disappointed once.

As a member of the Chapman Men’s Water Polo team I have also passed along the secret of Benjies to my teammates. With a full bar and big portions, it’s the perfect place for us to go after practice. You’ll see us every Tuesday night after our scrimmage in the Bamboo Lounge, stuffing our faces. We’ve all agreed as well, after seeing the catering menu, that for our water polo banquet we are going to suggest Benjies’ catering to our coach.

Being so close to Chapman, I was surprised I’d never heard of Benjies Deli before. With so many fraternity, sorority, philanthropic and sports events I’m surprised that more Chapman students don’t take advantage of Benjies New York Deli and catering service. Unfortunately I’ll be graduating this coming May and I don’t plan to stay in the area after. So I have one more year to enjoy Benjies before I go out into the real world. I will however be sure to visit Benjies whenever I’m at my alma mater.

Don’t forget to follow Benjies Deli on Twitter to find out about special Chapman University promotions! @benjiesdeli—there will be a special discount for Chapman students starting soon!

Benjies Deli: Orange County’s Best Jewish DELI!!

Most of us go to Benjies for the restaurant, but did you know that we actually have a full deli? A wide selection of our famous meats are on display and we encourage you to stop on your way out and buy a few portions to take home. Choose from turkey pastrami, rare roast beef, turkey breast, black forest ham and more—it will be great for packed lunches for you our your kids all week. Pack a lunch for the park or the beach and surprise your family with the quality and taste of Benjies Deli.

It’s a wonderful idea to bring a little of Benjies home with you and enjoy it throughout the week for lunch or dinner. You can also pick up some side dishes for your main dish to save on time when you’ve had a busy day. Our fantastic home-made beef or chicken pot pies keep so well in the freezer and make dinner a snap! We sell these up to 10 pot pies at a time—what can we say? They’re that good. Marie Callendar can eat her heart out.

The deli selection also includes: smoked whitefish, lox trimmings, Greek olives, beef knishes, potato knishes, kishka sausage, pickled tomatoes, coleslaw, potato salad, macaroni salad and kosher pickles. Surprise your family by adding one of these to your own dinner menu and it will be sure to be a hit! Don’t worry, we don’t mind if you take the credit, just as long as you keep coming back.

At special occasions and holidays, remember Benjies Deli can do the cooking for you, even for things like traditional Seder plates. If you call us two to three days in advance, we can even provide a brisket dinner with mashed potatoes, complete with all the sides necessary to not lift a finger except for bringing the food home from Benjies.

Don’t forget that life is uncertain—eat dessert first! It may not be the most important meal of the day, but it’s certainly our favorite, and it’s the best way to award yourself after a busy week. Try some of our apple strudel, cherry strudel, German chocolate cake, chocolate “wipe-out” cake, éclairs and napoleons available at the deli. We dare you to get home without eating one on the way…I’m sure your family won’t notice the crumbs on your chin.

Traditional Jewish Food in Orange County

Rosh Hashanah is only a month away, and if you’re looking for a place to celebrate this holiday, don’t forget that Benjies Deli has been serving traditional Jewish food in Santa Ana every day since we opened in 1967. We also cater traditional foods, too, and even prepare Seder plates in the spring, so if you’re having a celebration for a Jewish holiday, let Benjies Deli do all the cooking while you take the credit!

We have a huge list of traditional favorites on the Benjies menu, but we’ve listed a few of them here to tempt your tastebuds. We have four soups alone to choose from: our famous matzo ball; chicken soup with noodles, rice or kasha varnishkas; sweet and sour cabbage soup with chunks of beef; and finally our special “Mish Mosh, It’s a Meal!” soup, a bowl full of a matzoh ball, kreplach, rice, noodles, chicken and carrots all snug in our freshly made chicken stock. Angels Baseball, Pastrami Sandwiches and the NFL at Benjies Deli

Angels Baseball at Benjies Deli!

As the Angels continue their fairly unimpressive 2010 season, we can start to look forward to the upcoming football season. Preseason NFL starts August 8th so make Benjies Bamboo Lounge the spot to watch the game. You don’t have to get in a argument with your wife about buying the NFL Sunday Ticket channel, Benjies already has it. With six big screen TVs in the Bamboo Lounge come watch your favorite team play with your friends.

Also we can’t give up on the Angels’ season just yet. They still have a few more months to redeem themselves as they have in past seasons. This Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday come down to the Bamboo Lounge and watch the Angels play the struggling Boston Red Sox. Baseball fans love their hot dogs, and Benjies Deli has delicious Coney Island hot dogs, Coney Island chili dogs and the Francheesy, the most deluxe dog ever.

Or just order a few of our deli platters, like the cold cut buffet or the 16″ ring sandwich tray. With our deli platters, no one has to worry about ordering, they can just grab a sandwich while they watch their favorite team. Then again, you can always just have Benjies cater and have some people over at your house for the game. That way you can take credit for some incredible food, having not lifted a finger. It’s all about the game!!

Make sure to follow Benjies on Twitter to keep track of the weekly specials and promotions.

Benjies Deli-A History as Rich as its Food

An unlikely place to find a truly great New York style delicatessen, Benjies Deli in Santa Ana stands as a reminder to us all that some things get better with time. Benjies quaint 70’s New York diner ambiance has offered a unique experience for customers since 1967.  Born in Brooklyn New York in August of 1921, Stan Weinstein, the founder, was raised with his younger sister Isabel during the depression era in brownstone apartment on Avenue K in Brooklyn. Graduating Boys’ High, he went on to college as a pre-med student. With his education being interrupted by World War II, he proudly served in the army as a radio and communications specialist in India. While serving in the military, he met the love of his life Eleanor Finegold and they were married in 1946.

With the new responsibilities of marriage and a new baby, he wasn’t able to continue with his education and became the breadwinner for his new family. Working for Eleanor’s family in the “needles trade” as a cloth cutter in a clothing manufacturing plant, Stan decided to pursue a better life for his family and moved to Los Angeles where he continued to work for relatives in the garment industry.

In 1967 along with two partners, Stan purchased Squires coffee shop here on Tustin Avenue where it was remodeled and opened as Benjies on October 8 of 1967 where it exists today. It is now run by his son and daughter-in-law Lloyd and Noriko Weinstein where it has remained as an icon for 40 years.

Luckily Benjies has been able to balance the difficult task of keeping its wholesome ambiance while adapting to the times. The restaurant features The Bamboo Lounge with a full bar and several flat screen TV’s that cater to sports enthusiasts. Karaoke nights at The Bamboo Lounge have become a Friday night institution in Santa Ana. Perhaps the most fascinating feature of this retro joint is that many of the staff working at Benjies has been there for 30 years or more.  There are even photos of these employees on the wall at the restaurant commemorating the years gone by.

However, it’s clear that the strongest aspect of what Benjies has to offer is its unreal food. Benjie’s has something to satisfy every appetite, from fresh-cooked savory soups, to tender brisket with potato latkes (pancakes), unbelievable stuffed cabbage rolls, and the most delicious pastrami sandwiches in town.  And don’t forget the most important meal of the day. That’s right, Benjie’s also serves a delectable breakfast selection, all freshly made and at unbeatable prices.  When was the last time you had a huge omelet complete with all the fixins for $5.95? The full seven page menu is sure to have something that you will love.

To experience a true New York Style Deli right here in Orange County, drive or walk straight to 1828 N. Tustin Ave, Santa Ana (714)541-6263.  The restaurant is open 7 days a week 7 AM – 9PM, and Karaoke is 9PM- midnight Friday night.
