Celebrate Purim in Orange County at Benjies Deli!

Hamantashen cookies.

Purim is one of our favorite times of year. Even though the holiday is just 24 hours long, it’s definitely a fun one! We’re always happy when the Jewish festivals can take what might have been a dark time in history and turn it into a celebration.

But we also like it for the feasting, the drinking and the cookies. What cookies, you may ask? Hamantashen cookies! (more…)

Hmmm, we might need to talk to the chef about putting that on the menu…

Come in tonight for our mouthwateringly tender brisket dinners, and our long-awaited roast chicken, which customers have been begging us to put on the normal menu. But we like to keep it for special occasions, like Chanukah and Yom Kippur. (more…)

A Look at the Humble Kugel’s Origins

Mmmm....kugel.

The kugel is a mighty paradox. Why stick a $100 word with a humble serving of kugel? Well, for starters today most look at the kugel as a dessert, so why is it listed in the Benjies menu in the Deli Plates & Dairy Specialties? That is because in earlier times—say 800 years ago—it was considered a side dish due to it’s rather bland savory taste.

But you give people that many years trying to make it more sexy, you will get the conversion of a plain dish into a custard-like dessert. Who needs the next Top Chef to reinvent a traditional dish when this one has so many variations? (more…)
