Even though the Lakers are out of the playoffs, Benjies Deli still loves them and we want to thank them for the past three seasons of amazing plays and games. They have had a great run, and they will always be our favorite team. Go Lakers!
The Lakers may be out, but that doesn’t mean that the playoffs aren’t still going on (even though we know the Lakers were definitely a main attraction of the playoffs for many basketball fans like ourselves!). Come join Benjies Deli and catch the Heat versus the Celtics. Will Rajon Rondo still make amazing plays even with a dislocated elbow? Shaquille O’Neal finally made his postseason appearance after suffering from a sprained calf, but will the injury hinder him? Of course, our eyes are on Miami’s Dwayne Wade and Lebron James! And don’t forget about the Bulls versus the Hawks; the series is currently tied at 2-2, and Atlanta definitely has made quite a step up to keep Chicago’s star guard Derrick Rose from dominating. Needless to say, the playoffs are heating up!
The 2011 NBA Basketball Playoffs are in high gear, and the Los Angeles Lakers have shifted into full throttle! Currently, the Lakers are leading 3-2 against the New Orleans Hornets. Benjies Deli admits we were feeling a tad worried after a rather atrocious Game 1, where front man Pau Gasol, who normally averages 22.3 points per game, only scored a meager eight points and grabbed only six rebounds on the offensive. The poor performance caused the Lakers, ranked number 2 team by the Western Conference, to lose to the seventh-seeded Hornets! Talk about an upset! Lakers made a comeback in Game 2, with Andrew Bynum, Ron Artest and Lamar Odom picking up on Gasol’s slack, though the Hornets remained competitive until the end and definitely gave the Lakers a run for their money.
Though the Lakers are off to a fumbling start, Benjies Deli still has faith in our favorite LA team! Come out to Benjies Deli tonight to support the Lakers and watch them defeat the Hornets and advance in the playoffs. Enjoy a plate of our Kobe Beef Sliders and watch as Kobe Bryant beefs it up with the referees. Or, try out the Benjie Special, a hot pastrami sandwich and coleslaw with Russian dressing on rye, served with potato salad. Longing for something even heartier? Don’t forget about our famous corned beef and cabbage plate, the best Orange County has to offer!
If you are just feeling snacky, grab a drink at the Bamboo Lounge’s fully stocked bar. There are six large screen TVs and an abundance of space to seat all of your friends. Dunk into a tall glass of ice-cold draft beer, and score big with our corned beef, pastrami and Swiss cheese triple-decker sandwich as tall as Andrew Bynum. Feeling the team spirit? The Lakers' Andrew Bynum
No, not the usual pre-season questions like are the Lakers and the Celtics going to have another battle of the playoffs, or will the Clippers ever string enough wins together to get a sniff at the playoffs. Those are so yesterday! Instead, let’s reserve the Bamboo Lounge at Benjies, load up on corned beef, pastrami and Swiss cheese triple-decker sandwiches and beer to resolve bigger questions that demand answers.
For instance, will all the rubles in Russia make the Nets a winner? We know money can’t buy everything, but rubles? Maybe, just maybe the crazy Ruskie will pull it off—or maybe the Nets will end up playing in the NBA (National Bolshevik Association) in Siberia. They better load up on Benjies’ famous sweet and sour cabbage soup for those long cold nights! (more…)

Although it was one of the ugliest games of basketball I’ve ever seen the Lakers prevailed. As Phil Jackson said, “Well, it’s done. It wasn’t well done, but it was done. And we did it with perseverance.” It couldn’t have been more dramatic either with the Celtics pushing their lead to 13 in the third quarter and the Lakers showing no sign of a run. Finally the Lakers started to chip away at the Celtic’s lead in the fourth. With Artest, finally showing up offensively, hitting a crucial 3-pointer at the end of the fourth the Lakers came out on top. Miraculously the Lakers only had a shot percentage of 32.5 and were 67.6 percent from the line-statistics that aren’t indicative of a win. However they pulled through with the win and avenged their 2008 loss to the Celtics.
Now with the basketball season over I feel a little lost. Luckily the FIFA World Cup is in full swing and we have another reason to go hang out at Benjies Deli. The Lakers are 1-0 in the final series of the playoffs and it’s looking good. They’ve finally got in a groove on defense. But probably the most comforting aspect of the game for me was that Doc River’s strategy was to stop Kobe. Not only did the Celtics fail at stopping Kobe—for the most part—but Kobe was only part of their problem. Kobe and Gasol, the gruesome twosome, had a combined 53 points in the game and kept linking up. The entire Lakers triangle offense kept the entire team scoring well. The Celtics brought their own renowned defense to the game along with intensity, but it wasn’t anywhere near enough. The next game should be closer in scoring, considering the Celtics will be more reluctant to allow their big three to get into foul trouble early.
We still have our work cut out for us if we want to pull this series off, but we’re off to an optimistic start. That being said, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t dress up head to toe in gold and purple for Sunday’s game and come to Benjies Deli to be with your friends. Enjoy some of their new Kobe Beef Sliders and watch the Celtics fail at stopping one of Kobe’s runs. (more…)
