Yes, we’re done with Valentine’s Day and being all lovey-dovey. We’re ready for a real party—and March is just around the corner! We love March because it has one of the most popular holidays of all time: St. Patrick’s Day.

The Lakers' Andrew Bynum

No, not the usual pre-season questions like are the Lakers and the Celtics going to have another battle of the playoffs, or will the Clippers ever string enough wins together to get a sniff at the playoffs. Those are so yesterday! Instead, let’s reserve the Bamboo Lounge at Benjies, load up on corned beef, pastrami and Swiss cheese triple-decker sandwiches and beer to resolve bigger questions that demand answers.

For instance, will all the rubles in Russia make the Nets a winner? We know money can’t buy everything, but rubles? Maybe, just maybe the crazy Ruskie will pull it off—or maybe the Nets will end up playing in the NBA (National Bolshevik Association) in Siberia. They better load up on Benjies’ famous sweet and sour cabbage soup for those long cold nights!

Also, since the Dallas Cowboys are flubbing up their chance to play in Jerry Jones’ football palace in the Super Bowl, will he steal the Mavericks and have them put on the pads? Another question that will be answered as the season launches—will anybody attend a Cleveland game now that LeBron has jumped ship? Perhaps the management can just mount big screens in their stadium and show live Heat games. Will that change the way fans root for their home team? Closer to home, will the Lakers turn Andrew Bynum over to the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) to rehabilitate his knee? Maybe they can prove this dog can hunt for a full season! On the other hand if they cannot, will Mr. Buss give them the option of handling the situation like they handle lame horses?

Speaking of horses, how about Carlos Boozer and the Chicago Bulls. Will he end up carrying all those Bulls on his shoulders just like he carried all those Jazz? Benjies will be the meeting place to watch the transformation.

Angels Baseball at Benjies Deli!

As the Angels continue their fairly unimpressive 2010 season, we can start to look forward to the upcoming football season. Preseason NFL starts August 8th so make Benjies Bamboo Lounge the spot to watch the game. With the new responsibilities of marriage and a new baby, he wasn’t able to continue with his education and became the breadwinner for his new family. Working for Eleanor’s family in the “needles trade” as a cloth cutter in a clothing manufacturing plant, Stan decided to pursue a better life for his family and moved to Los Angeles where he continued to work for relatives in the garment industry.

In 1967 along with two partners, Stan purchased Squires coffee shop here on Tustin Avenue where it was remodeled and opened as Benjies on October 8 of 1967 where it exists today. It is now run by his son and daughter-in-law Lloyd and Noriko Weinstein where it has remained as an icon for 40 years.

Luckily Benjies has been able to balance the difficult task of keeping its wholesome ambiance while adapting to the times. The restaurant features The Bamboo Lounge with a full bar and several flat screen TV’s that cater to sports enthusiasts. Karaoke nights at The Bamboo Lounge have become a Friday night institution in Santa Ana. Perhaps the most fascinating feature of this retro joint is that many of the staff working at Benjies has been there for 30 years or more.  There are even photos of these employees on the wall at the restaurant commemorating the years gone by.

However, it’s clear that the strongest aspect of what Benjies has to offer is its unreal food. David Sax of "Save the Deli"

It seems that the only person crazier about good Jewish deli products than us is David Sax—shown here, suavely navigating the busy streets of the New York metropolis as he balances a cell phone in one hand and a drippingly delicious pastrami on rye in the other. This guy is SERIOUS.

And guess who noticed? The folks at the James Beard Awards. His book called, unsurprisingly, Save the Deli took him across North America and Europe in search of great Jewish delis, prompted by the fact that many had fallen to the devilish trio of homogenization, assimilation and (eek!) health food concerns. In his exclusive letter to Amazon.com, Sax also unashamedly admits that he had fallen prey to generalizing:

“Three years ago, when I began working on this book, I too had fallen prey to the misguided notion that great deli was only confined to New York and Montreal. Anything outside those cities had to be a pale imitation. I, like many Jewish deli lovers, was narrow-minded, could see and imagine no further than the local delicatessen I frequented…a village simpleton who knows nothing beyond his little shtetl and the salamis therein.”

But he did sally forth to delis new and unfamiliar, and wrote a book that is not only informative but hunger inducing. Unfortunately Mr. Sax did not venture south of Los Angeles on his California trip, perhaps unable to penetrate the Orange Curtain after a bellyful of pastrami, lox, brisket and blintzes. But in a very kind and generous note to us here at Benjies, Mr. Sax said that next time he was in California he’d definitely stop by. More importantly, he did say that he’s “heard great things” about Benjies Deli, and will send his parents by on their next regular trip to nearby Newport Beach.
