Celebrate Purim in Orange County at Benjies Deli!

Hamantashen cookies.

Purim is one of our favorite times of year. Even though the holiday is just 24 hours long, it’s definitely a fun one! We’re always happy when the Jewish festivals can take what might have been a dark time in history and turn it into a celebration.

But we also like it for the feasting, the drinking and the cookies. What cookies, you may ask? Hamantashen cookies! (more…)

More Than Just Matzoh Ball Soup!

The rain has arrived again, and nothing’s better for a rainy day than a bowl of warming, filling soup. And at Benjies Deli, all of our soup is made from scratch and made fresh daily! And best of all, every soup is served with our fresh rye bread and butter.

Now you might think that Benjies only makes matzo ball soup, but we don’t stop there. Our matzo ball soup is definitely a favorite with our regulars, don’t get us wrong, but we make 10 different kinds of soup for our customers. What can we say? We love soup!

So let’s start with the matzo ball soup—fluffy, delicious matzo balls swimming in our home-made chicken broth with chicken pieces and carrots. Not hearty enough for you? Try out Mish Mosh…It’s a Meal! soup, which has a matzo ball, kreplach, rice and noodles added to that hand-crafted chicken broth, chicken pieces and carrots. (more…)

Latkes for Hannukah at Benjies Deli!

Latkes for Hanukkah!

Hot, crispy and full of potato goodness. Yes, it’s almost Hanukkah, and that means it’s time for latkes! Hanukkah starts this Wednesday, and Benjies will be selling latkes in the restaurant or by the dozen to go.

But why latkes? Latkes, or potato pancakes, are a traditional Jewish dish, often served during Hanukkah. Because they are fried in oil, commemorating the oil that miraculously provided light for eight days, latkes have gained popularity as a Hanukkah dish. (But that doesn’t mean you can only get latkes at Hanukkah time. Happily, many delis and Jewish restaurants sell them year round, like Benjies!) Legend has it that Judith of Holofernes was able to put the Assyrian leader into a deep sleep by serving him latkes. With the advantage provided by his deep sleep, Judith took the opportunity and beheaded the Assyrian leader. Naturally, the Assyrians ended their siege because they no longer had a leader.

But potatoes are a New World food—how could they make latkes in Biblical times? That’s true: back then, it’s thought that latkes were made of grated cheese bound with egg, fried in oil. By serving the Assyrian leader what were basically cheese puffs and (if legend is accurate) a large quantity of wine, Judith must have been sure her plan would work. (more…)

Benjies Deli: Orange County’s Best Jewish DELI!!

Most of us go to Benjies for the restaurant, but did you know that we actually have a full deli? A wide selection of our famous meats are on display and we encourage you to stop on your way out and buy a few portions to take home. Choose from turkey pastrami, rare roast beef, turkey breast, black forest ham and more—it will be great for packed lunches for you our your kids all week. Pack a lunch for the park or the beach and surprise your family with the quality and taste of Benjies Deli.

It’s a wonderful idea to bring a little of Benjies home with you and enjoy it throughout the week for lunch or dinner. You can also pick up some side dishes for your main dish to save on time when you’ve had a busy day. Our fantastic home-made beef or chicken pot pies keep so well in the freezer and make dinner a snap! We sell these up to 10 pot pies at a time—what can we say? They’re that good. Marie Callendar can eat her heart out.

The deli selection also includes: smoked whitefish, lox trimmings, Greek olives, beef knishes, potato knishes, kishka sausage, pickled tomatoes, coleslaw, potato salad, macaroni salad and kosher pickles. Surprise your family by adding one of these to your own dinner menu and it will be sure to be a hit! Don’t worry, we don’t mind if you take the credit, just as long as you keep coming back.

At special occasions and holidays, remember Benjies Deli can do the cooking for you, even for things like traditional Seder plates. If you call us two to three days in advance, we can even provide a brisket dinner with mashed potatoes, complete with all the sides necessary to not lift a finger except for bringing the food home from Benjies.

Don’t forget that life is uncertain—eat dessert first! It may not be the most important meal of the day, but it’s certainly our favorite, and it’s the best way to award yourself after a busy week. Try some of our apple strudel, cherry strudel, German chocolate cake, chocolate “wipe-out” cake, éclairs and napoleons available at the deli. We dare you to get home without eating one on the way…I’m sure your family won’t notice the crumbs on your chin.

To experience a true, New York-style deli right here in Orange County, drive or walk directly to 1828 N. Tustin Avenue in Santa Ana.  The restaurant is open 7 days a week 7 AM – 9PM, and Karaoke is 9PM- midnight on Friday nights.
