The Ultimate St. Patrick’s Day Dish: Corned Beef and Cabbage

Traditional corned beef and cabbage...delicious!

What’s the deal with corned beef and cabbage? Is there corn mashed in together with the beef?  And a head of cabbage used as garnish on the side? Or, are you only familiar with the over-salted version of the dish, forever consigned to tacky St. Patrick’s Day celebrations at rundown bars?  Well, in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, this is a tribute to one of Benjies Deli’s signature dishes, corned beef and cabbage!

Corned beef has quite an extensive and secular history, but is most famous for its origin in Ireland. The name “corned beef” derives not from the vegetable but from the process of curing the meat using large pieces of rock-salt kernels, which are called “corns of salt”.   Up until the 19th century, the Irish were the main exporters of corned beef, finding the preserved and salted meat a necessity for the famine-stricken country.  There is great debate about whether or not corned beef and cabbage is authentically Irish or not, many arguing that the dish came about after the Irish immigrated to America.

Authentically Irish or not, you can’t deny the deliciousness of corned beef and cabbage! If you’ve ever had a bad experience with corned beef and cabbage (ahem, American bars!), come on by to Benjies Deli to dispel any fallacies you ever had of this tasty dish.  Yes, that’s right—the Jewish do it better! Also, Benjies Deli will be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day for an entire week (Monday, March 14 to Sunday, March 20), even more reason for you to come in and enjoy a plate and a pint of green Budweiser!

And don’t worry if you are celebrating St. Patrick’s Day at home– Benjies Deli has got you covered for dinner! We offer deluxe catering, and can provide you and your friends with party-sized platters of our most popular dishes—including corned beef and cabbage.  Minimum party size is 6 people, and we need 24-72 hours advance notice. Call us today at (714) 541-6263 and place your order!

St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations At Benjies!

It’s March, and you know what that means—why, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, of course! We were just too impatient last month to hold our excitement in, but now the month of shamrocks, pots o’ gold, leprechauns (and Benjies Deli’s award-winning corned beef and pints of green Budweiser, too) is finally here.  The best part is that Benjies Deli won’t just be holding a one-day St. Patrick’s Day celebration—no sir, we will be having a week-long bash starting Monday, March 14 all the way through Sunday, March 20!

Why on earth are we celebrating St. Patrick’s Day for a week?  Well, why not?  Why not partake in Ireland’s most celebrated holiday, where we can honor the country’s most revered patron saint? Or, just as importantly, why limit our customers to just one day of celebration?  We would hate to see our customers have to wait in a jam-packed restaurant on March 17, so in order accommodate everyone, Benjies Deli will be holding the St. Patrick’s Day festivities for six days.

And, a bonus reason for celebrating St. Patrick’s Day is that the holiday is right before the first day of spring, and what better way to ring in the new season than with our famous pastrami and some matzo ball soup?

Come in during the week with your friends and take advantage of our big screens and full bar in the Bamboo Lounge. The Lakers are playing the Orlando Magic on Monday, March 14th, the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday, March 18th, and the Portland Trailblazers on Sunday, March 20th—watch the Lakers win while celebrating the Irish holiday with some hot corned beef and cabbage and refreshing green Budweiser!

Let’s Talk Turkey–Turkey Pastrami, That Is!

Turkey pastrami!

Let’s face it—everyone loves a pastrami sandwich. Yes, even vegetarians and vegans, who seem to have a Reuben or a “pastrami” sandwich on every restaurant menu!

And why not? Pastrami has a delicious, savory flavor profile that makes it perfect for sandwiches. And you know how skyscraper-high Benjies Deli packs their sandwiches. But what about those who aren’t vegetarian, but can’t handle beef? What about those who are watching their weight, and need a leaner meat than beef in their sandwich, but don’t want to sacrifice taste? (more…)

Chicken salad

Just think: a platter of deviled eggs, just like mom used to make, and made by hand. If you’re attending a party, these are a perfect appetizer to bring. Benjies also makes their chicken, tuna and egg salads from scratch too. What restaurant makes anything from scratch anymore? Benjies New York Deli, that’s who. They’ve been doing it that way since Stan Weinstein opened the restaurant in 1967. (more…)

Let’s face it—your wife will either be out shopping or, if she’s a fan, she’s going to want to watch the game, not make sandwiches for your buddies.

Here’s an idea: clear the coffee table and measure it. Then call Benjies New York Deli and order up a combination of sandwich fixin’s and finger food. SuperBowl Approaches!!

February 6th marks a very special annual event in the male (and many female!) calendar. Cue dramatic music….yes, it’s the Superbowl!

This year marks Superbowl 45 and, although we don’t know who exactly will be playing, we do know that the Dallas Cowboys will be hosting. Hosting, I said, not playing on the field. Maybe next year, Cowboys! (more…)

Haute Living Names Benjies Deli as One of the Best Delis in Orange County!

We love accolades!

Haute Living’s online magazine has picked out Benjies Deli as one of their top five delis in Orange County. And if you have to ask what type of magazine Haute Living is, you’re definitely not their target audience.

This is no weekly rag, or flimsy magazine filled with paparazzi snaps of celebrities out shopping. Oh no. Haute Living magazine regularly features such magnates as Steve Wynn, Sumner Redstone and Michael Douglas on the cover. To put it point blank: their readership isn’t “slumming it” by any means.

And that’s why we’re so pleased that they chose our humble New York deli. We’ve been nestled in Santa Ana since 1967, and have remained relatively unchanged—our service, our recipes and even our bread slicer are still hard at work bringing our clients young and old the same great flavors, day after day.

And although we’re among good company in the top 5 list, we are the only New York-style deli in the roster, which means you can get all the East Coast favorites here, from Reubens to latkes to matzoh ball soup. Plus, they even mention we have a full bar—although they forgot to give our fantastic catering a plug.

But we’ll forgive them! After all, as the author Christopher Luu points out: “There’s nothing they can’t tackle if the most discerning New Yorkers frequent this deli.”

Hot Sandwiches: Dip or Melt?

Mmmm....French Dip!

The best thing about sandwiches is that there are so many different kinds to choose from. Let’s face it, sandwiches are very personal—just ask anyone. What’s delicious for some (peanut butter-BLT, for instance) may sound disgusting to others. When you were a kid, bologna on white with ketchup or a simple grilled cheese was probably your favorite thing ever, but now you’ve grown up a bit, and your tastes have matured.

And that’s when, sometimes, only a hot sandwich will do. But there’s days when a hot sandwich with a delicious bowl of au jus to dunk it in is the perfect meal, and then others when you want gooey, cheesy goodness melted all over that meat between two crispy pieces of bread.

Luckily, you’re a fan of Benjies Deli. They’ve got four different kinds of their Big Dip Sandwich and four different choices for their Melts (five, really. Because if you ask nicely, they’ll put a Garden™ Burger in a Melt!) (more…)

NBA Kicks off on Tuesday–and we have questions!!

The Lakers' Andrew Bynum

No, not the usual pre-season questions like are the Lakers and the Celtics going to have another battle of the playoffs, or will the Clippers ever string enough wins together to get a sniff at the playoffs. Those are so yesterday! Instead, let’s reserve the Bamboo Lounge at Benjies, load up on corned beef, pastrami and Swiss cheese triple-decker sandwiches and beer to resolve bigger questions that demand answers.

For instance, will all the rubles in Russia make the Nets a winner? We know money can’t buy everything, but rubles? Maybe, just maybe the crazy Ruskie will pull it off—or maybe the Nets will end up playing in the NBA (National Bolshevik Association) in Siberia. They better load up on Benjies’ famous sweet and sour cabbage soup for those long cold nights! (more…)
