Augusta National Golf Club, home and host of the Masters Tournament

The first week of April hails excitement for many golf fans across the nation, as the one of the biggest golf tournaments of the year, the Masters Tournament, finally kicks off. The Masters Tournament, originally called the “Augusta National Invitation” tournament, began in 1934 as the brainchild of golf extraordinaire Bobby Jones. After retiring from his golf career, Jones pursued a different dream—to build the ultimate golf course. Jones found the perfect piece of land in Augusta, Georgia, and with the help of Clifford Roberts (who later became the chairman of the course), the two transformed the lot into what is known today as the legendary August National Golf Club. Many deem the Augusta Course as the best golf course in the nation, and it continually ranks in Golf Digest’s Top 100 Golf Courses of America. The August National Golf Club is the official golf course for the Masters Tournament, an event with as just as formidable of a reputation as the golf course itself.

This year will be the 75^th Masters Tournament, scheduled from April 7-April 10 2011. Watch as the golf world’s biggest names, from Hideki Matsuyama to Tiger Woods, compete for the coveted green jacket and the championship title.

March is always an eventful month for Benjies Deli, filled with collegiate basketball games and St. Patrick’s Day festivities. But now that the celebrations have subsided, we are gearing up for another big event: Passover. Passover will commence on Tuesday, April 19^th, 2011 and will continue for seven days. In true Jewish fashion, we will be doing our part for Passover by offering a traditional Seder meal.

The Seder is traditionally a ceremonial meal consumed on the first night of Passover. The rituals and foods of the Seder all represent something symbolic; For example, the unleavened bread represents the urgency of the Israelites having to leave Egypt. An entire process of reading passages, singing, and drinking goblets of wine usually accompanies the meal.

During April 18^th-19^th after 4 PM only, you can come in to Benjies Deli and enjoy a traditional Seder meal for only $14.95. Or, if you prefer to have your traditional meal at home, you can call ahead to place a to-go order for only $15.95.

There are certain foods eaten during the ritual Seder family meal served on the first two nights of Passover. Although over time, family customs may have changed the items served at the Seder, the following foods usually appear on the Seder plate:

• Matzoh: Three unleavened matzohs are layered within napkins as a reminder of how quickly the Israelites were forced to flee Egypt, leaving no time for dough to rise. Two are eaten during the service, and one (the Aftkomen), is hidden during the ceremony to be later found as a prize.

• Maror: bitter herbs, usually horseradish or romaine lettuce, used to symbolize the bitterness of slavery.

• Charoses: a mixture of apples, wine, nuts and cinnamon, as a reminder of the mortar used in building by the Jews during their slavery

• Beitzah: a roasted egg, as a symbol of life and the continuation of existence.

• Karpas: a vegetable, usually celery or boiled potato, representing hope and redemption; served with a bowl of salted water to represent the tears shed.

• Zeroah: traditionally a piece of roasted lamb shankbone, symbolizing the paschal sacrificial offering

• Wine: four glasses of wine are drunk during the service to represent the four-fold promise of redemption. A special glass is left for Elijah the prophet.

Traditional corned beef and cabbage...delicious!

What’s the deal with corned beef and cabbage? Is there corn mashed in together with the beef? And a head of cabbage used as garnish on the side? Or, are you only familiar with the over-salted version of the dish, forever consigned to tacky St. Patrick’s Day celebrations at rundown bars? Well, in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, this is a tribute to one of Benjies Deli’s signature dishes, corned beef and cabbage!

Corned beef has quite an extensive and secular history, but is most famous for its origin in Ireland. The name “corned beef” derives not from the vegetable but from the process of curing the meat using large pieces of rock-salt kernels, which are called “corns of salt”. Up until the 19^th century, the Irish were the main exporters of corned beef, finding the preserved and salted meat a necessity for the famine-stricken country. There is great debate about whether or not corned beef and cabbage is authentically Irish or not, many arguing that the dish came about after the Irish immigrated to America.

Authentically Irish or not, you can’t deny the deliciousness of corned beef and cabbage! Are you ready for corned beef and cabbage?

Yes, we’re done with Valentine’s Day and being all lovey-dovey. We’re ready for a real party—and March is just around the corner! We love March because it has one of the most popular holidays of all time: St. Patrick’s Day.

And if you’re looking for the best place to go for the best St. Patrick’s Day celebration, head on over to Benjies Deli. We’ll be celebrating this fantastic holiday ALL WEEK, with the best corned beef and cabbage this side of Ireland and all the green Budweiser you can drink.

Why do we celebrate it all week? Well, if we just celebrated St. Patrick’s Day on the day, we would have a lot of disappointed customers who wouldn’t be able to be seated, due to the huge amount of people who flock to Benjies on March 17th. We’ve won awards for our corned beef and cabbage (who knew the Jewish could make it better than the Irish!?), and our customers love it all year round. But on March 17th, everyone seems to want corned beef and cabbage! So we make sure we give all of our customers a chance by celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with our specials all week, from Monday, March 14th through to Sunday, March 20th.

Come in during the week with your friends and take advantage of our big screens and full bar in the Bamboo Lounge. The Lakers are playing the Orlando Magic on Monday, March 14th, the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday, March 18th, and the Portland Trailblazers on Sunday, March 20th—watch the Lakers win while celebrating the Irish holiday with some hot corned beef and cabbage and refreshing green Budweiser!

Superbowl XLV

The clock is ticking on the final countdown to the Superbowl, and after last week’s Playoffs, fans from Philly and Wisconsin sure are looking forward to February 6th.

So the clock is also ticking on the time needed for catering. Benjies Deli has been taking a lot of orders for sandwich trays and deli platters for the big day. February 6th marks a very special annual event in the male (and many female!) calendar. Cue dramatic music….yes, it’s the Superbowl!

This year marks Superbowl 45 and, although we don’t know who exactly will be playing, we do know that the Dallas Cowboys will be hosting. Hosting, I said, not playing on the field. Maybe next year, Cowboys! (more…)

We love accolades!

Haute Living’s online magazine has picked out Benjies Deli as one of their top five delis in Orange County. And if you have to ask what type of magazine Haute Living is, you’re definitely not their target audience.

This is no weekly rag, or flimsy magazine filled with paparazzi snaps of celebrities out shopping. Oh no. Haute Living magazine regularly features such magnates as Steve Wynn, Sumner Redstone and Michael Douglas on the cover. To put it point blank: their readership isn’t “slumming it” by any means.

And that’s why we’re so pleased that they chose our humble New York deli. We’ve been nestled in Santa Ana since 1967, and have remained relatively unchanged—our service, our recipes and even our bread slicer are still hard at work bringing our clients young and old the same great flavors, day after day.

And although we’re among good company in the top 5 list, we are the only New York-style deli in the roster, which means you can get all the East Coast favorites here, from Reubens to latkes to matzoh ball soup. Plus, they even mention we have a full bar—although they forgot to give our fantastic catering a plug.

But we’ll forgive them! After all, as the author Christopher Luu points out: “There’s nothing they can’t tackle if the most discerning New Yorkers frequent this deli.”
