March Madness has erupted! After the St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations are over (Benjies Deli will be partying until March 20th!), grab your buddies and come on by to the Bamboo Lounge for another month of celebration—this time, for the competition between the NCAA Division I Basketball college teams!  Yes, “March Madness”, the month where our nation is rocked by a sudden psychosis over basketball, is here once again.  Now that the 68 teams have been announced for the NCAA tournament, it is time for you to fill out your brackets and watch as your favorite collegiate athletes skyrocket to their dreams.

Come on by to the Bamboo Lounge at Benjies Deli, where six screens flash sports action for your viewing pleasure.  The Bamboo Lounge also has a full bar with ample seating for large groups, and also a menu of tasty bar food that changes every week.  Or, if you are feigning for a bigger meal, you can also order from Benjies Deli’s full menu of classic deli selections.

And if you prefer watching the March Madness games from the comfort of your own home, Benjies Deli also offers delicious catering!  Check out our deli platters and catering options here, and call us at least 48 hours in advance at (714) 541-6263 to place your order.

The Ultimate St. Patrick’s Day Dish: Corned Beef and Cabbage

Traditional corned beef and cabbage...delicious!

What’s the deal with corned beef and cabbage? Is there corn mashed in together with the beef?  And a head of cabbage used as garnish on the side? Or, are you only familiar with the over-salted version of the dish, forever consigned to tacky St. Patrick’s Day celebrations at rundown bars?  Well, in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, this is a tribute to one of Benjies Deli’s signature dishes, corned beef and cabbage!

Corned beef has quite an extensive and secular history, but is most famous for its origin in Ireland. The name “corned beef” derives not from the vegetable but from the process of curing the meat using large pieces of rock-salt kernels, which are called “corns of salt”.   Up until the 19th century, the Irish were the main exporters of corned beef, finding the preserved and salted meat a necessity for the famine-stricken country.  There is great debate about whether or not corned beef and cabbage is authentically Irish or not, many arguing that the dish came about after the Irish immigrated to America.

Authentically Irish or not, you can’t deny the deliciousness of corned beef and cabbage! If you’ve ever had a bad experience with corned beef and cabbage (ahem, American bars!), come on by to Benjies Deli to dispel any fallacies you ever had of this tasty dish.  Yes, that’s right—the Jewish do it better! Also, Benjies Deli will be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day for an entire week (Monday, March 14 to Sunday, March 20), even more reason for you to come in and enjoy a plate and a pint of green Budweiser!

And don’t worry if you are celebrating St. Patrick’s Day at home– Benjies Deli has got you covered for dinner! We offer deluxe catering, and can provide you and your friends with party-sized platters of our most popular dishes—including corned beef and cabbage.  Minimum party size is 6 people, and we need 24-72 hours advance notice. Call us today at (714) 541-6263 and place your order!

St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations At Benjies!

It’s March, and you know what that means—why, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, of course! We were just too impatient last month to hold our excitement in, but now the month of shamrocks, pots o’ gold, leprechauns (and Benjies Deli’s award-winning corned beef and pints of green Budweiser, too) is finally here.  The best part is that Benjies Deli won’t just be holding a one-day St. Patrick’s Day celebration—no sir, we will be having a week-long bash starting Monday, March 14 all the way through Sunday, March 20!

Why on earth are we celebrating St. Patrick’s Day for a week?  Well, why not?  Why not partake in Ireland’s most celebrated holiday, where we can honor the country’s most revered patron saint? Or, just as importantly, why limit our customers to just one day of celebration?  We would hate to see our customers have to wait in a jam-packed restaurant on March 17, so in order accommodate everyone, Benjies Deli will be holding the St. Patrick’s Day festivities for six days.

And, a bonus reason for celebrating St. Patrick’s Day is that the holiday is right before the first day of spring, and what better way to ring in the new season than with our famous pastrami and some matzo ball soup?

Come in during the week with your friends and take advantage of our big screens and full bar in the Bamboo Lounge. The Lakers are playing the Orlando Magic on Monday, March 14th, the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday, March 18th, and the Portland Trailblazers on Sunday, March 20th—watch the Lakers win while celebrating the Irish holiday with some hot corned beef and cabbage and refreshing green Budweiser!

Benjies and the Jets

The NFL Playoffs are here!

Well, after yesterday’s games, we’re narrowing down the teams that will grace the field in Arlington, TX in two weeks time. Many of our “bird” teams have flown the Superbowl coop, including the Seahawks, the Ravens and the Falcons. And seeing as how our nation’s bird is the eagle, perhaps there’s a link there with the Patriot’s loss.

So next weekend we’ll see how the New York Jets do against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Green Bay Packers will battle the Chicago Bears for the honor of going to football’s ultimate showdown. Sounds like there will be time spent in front of the television, and we know what that means. Snacks. Oh yeah, lots of snacks. (more…)

SuperBowl Approaches!!

February 6th marks a very special annual event in the male (and many female!) calendar. Cue dramatic music….yes, it’s the Superbowl!

This year marks Superbowl 45 and, although we don’t know who exactly will be playing, we do know that the Dallas Cowboys will be hosting. Hosting, I said, not playing on the field. Maybe next year, Cowboys! (more…)

Haute Living Names Benjies Deli as One of the Best Delis in Orange County!

We love accolades!

Haute Living’s online magazine has picked out Benjies Deli as one of their top five delis in Orange County. And if you have to ask what type of magazine Haute Living is, you’re definitely not their target audience.

This is no weekly rag, or flimsy magazine filled with paparazzi snaps of celebrities out shopping. Oh no. Haute Living magazine regularly features such magnates as Steve Wynn, Sumner Redstone and Michael Douglas on the cover. To put it point blank: their readership isn’t “slumming it” by any means.

And that’s why we’re so pleased that they chose our humble New York deli. We’ve been nestled in Santa Ana since 1967, and have remained relatively unchanged—our service, our recipes and even our bread slicer are still hard at work bringing our clients young and old the same great flavors, day after day.

And although we’re among good company in the top 5 list, we are the only New York-style deli in the roster, which means you can get all the East Coast favorites here, from Reubens to latkes to matzoh ball soup. Plus, they even mention we have a full bar—although they forgot to give our fantastic catering a plug.

But we’ll forgive them! After all, as the author Christopher Luu points out: “There’s nothing they can’t tackle if the most discerning New Yorkers frequent this deli.”

Is Your Team Only Available on NFL Sunday Ticket?

Watch the Pittsburgh Steelers at Benjies Deli this Sunday

Now that Hanukkah is over, we can get back to the important things in life. This weekend, there’s another great lineup of bone-crushing NFL football to watch. But unless you’ve got Sunday Ticket, you could miss your favorite team, and that’s no good at all.

So why not get down to Benjies Deli and settle in at the Bamboo Lounge for six screens of awesome, high-definition football with their DirecTV Sunday Ticket lineup? You’ll get to eat all of Benjies’ superb food–and remember, those Jewish favorites like latkes and brisket are still being served, even after Hanukkah‘s over–and take advantage of the Bamboo Lounge’s full bar. It’s nearly impossible to watch football, or any sport for that matter, without beer. Am I right?

The experts are agreed on several predictions on winners this weekend; the San Francisco 49ers, the New York Jets, the New Orleans Saints, the New York Giants, the Baltimore Ravens, the Denver Broncos, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the San Diego Chargers seem to all have unanimous picks for wins by the ESPN experts. If both New York teams win, it will mean a big party in the Big Apple on Sunday night. (more…)

This season is proving to be a difficult one to pick the winners, just like trying to pick your favorite deli sandwich on Benjies extensive menu of traditional deli sandwiches. You’ve enjoyed the action, filled your belly with a good Benjies corned beef, and sated your thirst.

Gather all your friends and give Benjies a call at (714) 541-6263 and ask for Lloyd Weinstein to talk over the food menu you want to order for your private party. Your friends will not only be entertained by the game, but impressed with your taste for the good food that you can only get at Benjies. NBA Kicks off on Tuesday–and we have questions!!

The Lakers' Andrew Bynum

No, not the usual pre-season questions like are the Lakers and the Celtics going to have another battle of the playoffs, or will the Clippers ever string enough wins together to get a sniff at the playoffs. Those are so yesterday! Instead, let’s reserve the Bamboo Lounge at Benjies, load up on corned beef, pastrami and Swiss cheese triple-decker sandwiches and beer to resolve bigger questions that demand answers.

For instance, will all the rubles in Russia make the Nets a winner? We know money can’t buy everything, but rubles? Maybe, just maybe the crazy Ruskie will pull it off—or maybe the Nets will end up playing in the NBA (National Bolshevik Association) in Siberia. They better load up on Benjies’ famous sweet and sour cabbage soup for those long cold nights! (more…)

Deli platters!

In Orange County, it can be hard to find a good venue for a small party. But Benjies Deli has the answer—the Bamboo Lounge can be hired out for parties of up to 40 people. And it’s just in time for….Halloween! What a great place to get your friends together for a costume party on or around Halloween.

With six televisions and a fully stocked bar, the Bamboo Lounge is great for entertainment, and especially for a private party to celebrate the big game. For the 2010 Superbowl, The Bamboo Lounge was packed full of football fans, all booked by one of Benjies Deli’s regulars. But why wait until the Superbowl? Benjies Deli has the NFL Sunday Ticket playing in the Bamboo Lounge all the time. Is your favorite team playing soon? Get the gang together and watch it at Benjies Deli! We’ll bring our delicious, mile-high-stacked sandwiches and ice cold beers right to your table, so you and your friends don’t have to miss a minute of the game.

What everyone loves about Benjies Deli is the food, and you can definitely get everything from the menu over in the Bamboo Lounge. But remember, Benjies Deli also does delicious deli platters and sandwich trays, which are perfect for sporting events or informal parties. The Reuben is a firm favorite with Benjies’ die-hard fans, as is the Benjie’s Special. But why not try the meatball sandwich—a French roll stuffed with meatballs, provolone cheese and topped with rich marinara sauce and served with coleslaw. Not manly enough for you? Try these bellybusters: the BBQ beef or ham sandwich, piled high with thinly sliced beef or ham, smothered in our delicious barbecue sauce all on a French roll; our hot meatloaf sandwich, an open-faced sandwich of thick slabs of meatloaf and mashed potatoes smothered in savory brown gravy.

Feel like hot dogs while you’re watching the game, for that stadium feel? We got Coney Island Hot Dogs, plain or doused in chili and cheese.  Plus we have the best pastrami sandwiches in Orange County. If that wasn’t enough, the chefs are also happy to work with you to put together a menu just for your event.
